Installing Windows 7 on Netbooks, Macs

I’m fascinated by the ingenuity (and the sheer numbers) of people installing Windows 7 on their Netbooks, Macs, etc. So I’m going to collate the best of the best here –

Installing Windows 7 on Your Netbook

There are a lot of people doing cool things –

  1. Let’s start off with this useful video on how to install Windows 7 using a USB drive. Note that there is an alternate method i.e. using Magic Iso’s Magic Disk software or another virtual drive software.
  2. This is a GREAT post on how to shrink Windows 7 to get it to fit on netbooks with 4GB drives.

Netbooks on which Windows 7 has been installed include –

  1. Acer Aspire One – here’s a good post on Acer Aspire one and Windows 7.
  2. Dell Mini 9 – Installation Guide here.
  3. Asus Eee PC 1000H. Here’s a Windows 7 installation guide for Asus.
  4. MSI Wind.
  5. HP 2133 Mini-Note.
  6. Samsung NC10.
  7. Lenovo Idea Pad S10.

Installing Windows 7 on Mac

There are two good options for installing windows 7 on a Mac –

  1. Installing Windows 7 on Mac using BootCamp. I’ve got to say – having ads right at the start of your blog post really sucks. Doubly so when the ads are Google text Ads that are confusingly like actual text.
  2. Christina Warren has a good article on installing Windows 7 on Mac using Virtualization Software.

As a bonus here are some notes on installing Windows 7 on a Mac Book Air and almost a mini-review. An interesting snippet (note that he’s comparing it to windows vista on MBA) –

So far we (we? See later) have only little experience running Windows 7 Beta on the MBA but boot time has greatly improved and resume from sleep hasn’t caused any issues. The keyboard backlight works again. The whole system seems to run much faster and is more responsive.

Installing Windows 7 on UMPCs

In what’s just absolutely amazing to me, someone got Windows 7 working (and a 1.2 windows index) on a UMPC – Windows 7 on Amtek U560 to be precise. That’s a UMPC with an Atom A100 processor at 600 MHz and a paltry 512 MB of RAM. Hats off to the guy who managed it.

Some Thoughts

Being able to run Windows 7 on netbooks says a lot about both netbooks and windows 7. Linux has already lost first place in the Netbook arena to XP, and now it looks like Windows 7 is going to cement Microsoft’s dominance.

  1. So does running windows 7 on a mac mean that the mac is susceptible to virus?

  2. well, there will be more viruses targeting windows 7 than snow leopard. so you do need to get a good anti-virus program.
avast and avg anti-virus have free options.
microsoft is going to release a free antivirus program soon.
