Windows 7 runs on UMPCs
This is absolutely insane – Windows 7 is really making a name for itself.
This is an Amtek U560 UMPC. The manufacturer’s website is focused on their newer products so details are hard to get. However, this seems like a reasonable estimate of its features -
The Amtek U560 is equipped with an 800MHz Intel A110 processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 40GB 1.8" 4200RPM HDD. The display screen slides up to reveal a backlit split-screen QWERTY keyboard. Other fun features of the U560 UMPC include two USB 2.0 ports, a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Synaptics-based pointer, 802.11a/b/g, an integrated stand, and a CompactFlash slot
It says a few things –
- Windows 7 running on netbooks now seems pretty much guaranteed. And a bit less impressive
- 7 is going to likely become an OS used on a variety of devices like XP currently is.
- Things got worse for Linux.
- And for Apple too.
- The windows 7 team has done an exceptional engineering job. I’ve used Vista since its Beta and there is absolutely no comparison. I can’t ever imagine Vista working on a Netbook properly, let alone on a UMPC with 512 MB of RAM.
More and more signs that Windows 7 is going to be a hit.
