Windows 7

This post is all about “Windows 7″ - the name Microsoft has given the latest version of Windows.

I really like the name “Windows 7″ – 7 is short and sweet, and much better than a name like ‘vienna’ or ‘blackcomb’. First I’ll go into Mike Nash’s reasons Microsoft chose 7 -

The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows.  We’ve used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or “aspirational” monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista … Simply put, this is the seventh release of Windows, so therefore “Windows 7″ just makes sense.

For me, here are the main reasons -

  1. Simplicity. Its a really simple name.
  2. It’s the seventh release of windows. Logically 7 makes sense.
  3. Aspirational names suck – XP and Vista – that’s making things difficult. Even english speaking people don’t understand what vista means.
  4. 7 has a lucky connotation. In fact it even has some strong spiritual connotations.
  5. Its internationally relevant. Anyone in any country can understand what 7 means. Very few non-english speaking people, and for that matter very few english speaking people, understood what Vista meant.
  6. People relate much better to numbered releases than named releases.
  7. It allows people to relate to Windows 7 as a known update (version 7) of a known and trusted brand i.e. Windows. Simplifying things in people’s minds is a great thing.

I really think the name ‘Windows 7′ is going to make a big difference. And it’s imperative that Microsoft keeps Windows 7 very, very far apart from Vista. This is an obvious marketing move that anyone should be able to understand.

You want to posture Windows 7 as the 7th and best version of Windows. The multi-touch, the new superbar, and the other cool windows7 features really set this apart. Mr. Ballmer – would you please stop mentioning ‘vista’ in any windows 7 conversation. Feel free to tell people that Windows 7 runs all the programs that Vista did. However, in every other way paint Windows 7 as completely different from Vista.
